Games and humanities, really? Yes! Can you change the world with serious games? Yes! With a background in humanities you can get serious by developing innovative games and interactive installations. Sounds interesting? Come to our event!

In preparation of the meeting, please take a look at this game. Go on a laptop or tablet (not on your phone)  to: https://game.verhaalvaneenvluchteling.nl  and play the game. If you don’t speak Dutch, ask a friend to help out!

Serious gaming

This event is aimed at advanced (BA and/or MA) students and recent alumni of the Faculty of Humanities at UU, who are curious as to how humanities graduates can end up in the world of serious gaming and the creative industry. What is a serious game and how can they be used for teaching purposes or to address societal issues? What does it take to become successful in this world and what steps can you take during your studies and immediately after graduation? Find out, and put your skills to the test in an interactive brainstorm or workshop.

Programme

Speakers:
– Lotte Vergouwen Alumna of Communication and Information Sciences / New Media and Digital Culture
Expert in playful learning and course leader Games and Interaction at HKU (Utrecht Arts School)
Former managing director of IJsfontein.
“IJsfontein designs and develops playful (digital) learning based on the belief that people are naturally curious and intrinsically motivated to develop themselves. Examples include a serious game or gamification project for the purposes of personnel training, interactive experiences for museums, or cross-platform digital methodology for primary education.”

– Hiske Arts Alumna of University College Utrecht / Conflict Studies and Human Rights
Founder of Critical Mass (Dutch) and project leader of Angstfabriek (Dutch)
“Critical Mass is an Utrecht based NGO that designs interactive exhibitions, multimedia installations, films and games that encourage people to reflect on their own attitudes and behaviour. This way, we activate people to contribute to an inclusive society.”

We meet in the theater of Parnassos and after short introductions; our speakers will host a brainstorm session and a workshop related to their current projects. You can choose to participate in one of both activities. This way, you can pick and choose your topics of interest!

You need to register for this event (below) as space is limited.
